FIFA has confirmed that they will be investigating the claims that Luis Suarez tried to bite an opponent during Uruguay's World Cup win over Italy today.

The Liverpool striker was involved in a scuffle with Italian defender Giorgio Chiellini during the second half of today's Group D clash in Natal when he appeared to bite down on his opponent's shoulder.

The incident was missed by the referee but afterwards Chiellini claimed that he had been bitten and showed his shoulder, which appeared to show bite marks, on Italian TV.

A FIFA spokesperson says they are awaiting the official match reports and will "gather all the necessary elements in order to evaluate the matter."
