Gardaí and the Health and Safety Authority (HSA) are investigating the 20th fatal farm accident in the country this year.

TJ McDonagh, an agricultural contractor from Liscannor Co Clare, died last night after a wheel he had been fitting on a vehicle exploded.

He sustained serious head injuries and was pronounced dead after being airlifted to Galway University Hospital.

It comes as the Irish Farmers Association is urging farmers to 'think safety' following a rise in the number of people who have lost their lives on Irish farms.

A National Farm Safety Conference is underway in Kilkenny to look at ways to change dangerous behaviours and attitudes on farms.

The event, which is being organised by the HSA and Teagasc, will bring together psychologists, workplace safety experts and farmers.

Farmers are being urged to be safe while driving farm vehicles on roads and transporting grain during harvest season. Farming families are also being advised to refocus efforts on safety.

The IFA says the number of lives lost in accidents this year has already surpassed the total in 2013. The IFA president Eddie Downey said earlier that 2014 was proving to be a difficult year.
