Fine Gael TD Nicky McFadden laid to rest in Athlone

Hundreds of people have attended the funeral of Fine Gael TD Nicky McFadden. The Longford-Westmeath deputy (51) died on Tuesday after a two-year battle with Motor Neurone Disease.

The President and the Taoiseach and the majority of the Cabinet were in attendance.

The cortège carrying the remains of Nicky McFadden arrived at the Church of Our Lady Queen of Peace in Coosan in Athlone shortly after midday from her nearby home.

Her coffin was draped in the Tricolour.

The Fine Gael TD was elected to the Dail for the Longford-Westmeath constituency in 2011 and died on Tuesday after a two year battle with with Motor Neurone Disease.

Joining the chief mourners were her daughter Caren, son Eoin, and sisters Aine and Gab - the Mayor of Athlone.

The President Michael D. Higgins, the Taoiseach Enda Kenny and the Tanaiste Eamon Gilmore attended the service - as are the majority of the Cabinet - along with the Ceann Comhairle Sean Barrett and dozens of Nicky McFadden's Dail colleagues from all parties.

Members of the Seanad - which she was elected to in 2007 - were also in attendance. Most of the business in the Oireachtas today has been postponed as a mark of respect.

The Chief Celebrant Father Declan Shannon says she worked hard for the local community, and also that she battled her illness bravely.

Nicky McFadden's daughter Caren says her mother was a vivacious and generous person who loved everyone.

She was laid to rest in Coosan Cemetery, where the Taoiseach delivered a graveside oration.
