The Minister for Justice has expressed concern for a young woman who was denied an abortion under the new Protection of Life During Pregnancy Act.

It's understood the woman - who's not Irish - could not leave the country to have a termination, due to her legal status.

The woman, who is reported to have been raped, was assessed by a panel of three experts after she claimed she was suicidal - but the obstetrician said because the baby was at an advanced stage, it should be delivered.

The woman initially rejected this decision - and even went on hunger strike, but eventually agreed for the baby to be delivered by C Section.

The case has raised numerous questions about whether the Protection of Life During Pregnancy Act needs to be amended.

Minister Frances Fitzgerald, says they're continuing to monitor the new laws.

“Clearly I can’t comment on individual cases but I would be concerned obviously for the mother and her baby.

“Obviously we’ve brought legislation in line with her national and international obligations earlier this year and we will continue to monitor that legislation,” Minister Fitzgerald said.
