A funeral home has been forced to apologise to a family after a service in which they buried the wrong woman.

Bruce Lawson was attending the funeral service for his mother, Enda Dawson, when he noticed that she looked a little different.

When he raised his concerns with a female staff member at the funeral home, she insisted it was due to the embalming process that his mother's appearance appeared changed.

Shortly after the ceremony in Houston, Texas, the Dawson family were contacted by the Mabrie Memorial Mortuary and informed that they had actually buried a complete stranger next to their father's grave and not their mother.

The funeral home have since exhumed the remains buried in Mrs Lawson’s lot, apologised, and offered to bury her in her assigned grave.

Bruce Lawson told his local news station, KHOU, that he cannot bear to hold a second ceremony for the reburial of his beloved mother.

"You don’t want to send the loved ones through that all over again. She wanted a spiritual way to leave this earth, but it got robbed from her and her spirit," he said.
