Enda Kenny has again insisted that Alan Shatter did not know about a letter by Martin Callinan on the garda tapes until after he had quit. The garda taping affair has again dominated Leaders' Questions in the Dail this afternoon.

Michael Martin of Fianna Fáil said it was simply not credible that Minister Shatter's first briefing on the subject did not include the details Martin Callinan had sent two weeks earlier.

But the Taoiseach has said that the letter from Martin Callinan was not the subject of the briefing Alan Shatter was given last week.

Meanwhile the Transport Minister says Alan Shatter "allowed" the penalty points controversy to go on too long. Leo Varadkar says Alan Shatter let the whistleblower saga go on too long.

The Communications Minister has said the top civil servant in the Department of Justice should appear before an Oireachtas Committee over the phone recording controversy.

Secretary-General Brian Purcell is facing questions over the time between former Garda Commissioner Martin Callinan sending a letter to the department about the matter, and Minister Alan Shatter's receipt of it.

Minister Pat Rabbitte says he believes there are valid questions for Mr. Purcell to answer.
