Gardaí have launched a murder inquiry following the shooting dead of a man in Dublin last night.

Andy Connors (45) was shot several times in the upper body at his home in Old Pound in Boherboy in Saggart at around 11pm.

The father of six was a member of the local travelling community. His wife, four of his children and niece were in the house at the time.

The gunman - who was wearing a balaclava - used a handgun during the attack. He was pronounced dead in Tallaght Hospital later.

Garda spokesperson Superintendent Paul Moran is appealing to anyone with information to come forward.

Connors had a string of previous convictions and had served time for burglary.
