Fianna Fáil is calling for immediate action to give more staff to the Charities Regulatory Authority.

The regulator says it needs 36 staff to carry out all of its legal obligations - but it only has 12 at present.

The staffing levels are due to increase to 20 within two months, but it is not yet clear whether extra funding will be granted to allow recruitment beyond that.

In a statement the Department of Justice says it is fully supportive of the requirement, but it is understood that the Department of Public Expenditure must first sign off.

Fianna Fáíl justice spokesman Niall Collins says approval for the extra staff should be given immediately:

Jonathan Irwin, CEO of the Jack & Jill Foundation, said, “I am calling on this Government to follow up the rhetoric with real investment. We’ve been calling for a charity regulator for years, but we must have a properly functioning and properly resourced regulator.

"No ifs, buts or maybes. The budget line has got to be approved to make this happen," he added.
