The Irish Farmers' Association (IFA) wants the European Commission to protect farmers from falling food prices.

Hundreds of farmers in the dairy, grain, pig and other sectors took to the streets of Dublin earlier to voice their anger at falling incomes.

They are amongst the worst hit by falling incomes, and the IFA is calling on European Commissioner Phil Hogan to implement measures to secure income.

Farmers from around the country protested outside the EU Commission offices in Dublin earlier.

IFA President Eddie Downey said Agriculture Minister Simon Conveney must also take their message to Europe.

"Minister Coveney is going to Brussels next week - an emergency meeting of farm ministers - and I think it's very simple there, he's got to look at emergency measures that are going to protect family farm incomes" he said.

"On the diary side, we want intervention increased - we want the affects of the Russian ban, on the pig side, we want measures out in place that's going to help protect pig farmers incomes, and on the grain side intervention's got to increase as well" he added.

These dairy farmers explain why they came to protest today.

And Mr Downey told Newstalk Breakfast proper supports need to be put in place.
