Talks are taking place in Dublin between farmers and factories aimed at resolving a row over beef prices.

The negotiations are taking place amid a threat from the Irish Farmers Association (IFA) to stage 48 hour protests at production plants from Sunday.

Meat Industry Ireland is calling on the IFA to call off its proposed blockades while the talks are taking place.

The Agriculture Minister Simon Coveney says all sides need a beef market with stability and certainty.

Farmers claim the price paid for their beef is €350 per head less here than in the UK.

Last month, farmers staged a nationwide 24 hour protest outside meat factories to highlight their anger over beef prices.

IFA President Eddie Downey has said he expects some progress during the talks, but thinks it is unlikely there will be full agreement on all issues.

Darren Carty is from the Irish Farmers Journal. He says the situation is reaching crisis point.
