The co-founder of the ALS Ice Bucket challenge has tragically drowned in a swimming accident aged just 27.

Corey Griffin, who helped make the challenge the viral sensation it is today, was attending a fundraiser in Massachusetts when the accident occurred.

He dived off the wharf at the party and into the water below when he got into trouble.

According to reports, Griffin ‘floated to the surface… then went under water again not resurfacing’.

He was pulled from the water and given CPR on the scene before he was taken to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Griffin's friend Pete Frates, was diagnosed with ALS in 2012 which inspired the pair to begin the ice bucket challenge to raise money for ALS research.

Corey helped promote the challenge, which has gone viral with international stars participating, and has raised millions.

Griffin helped raised $100,000 (€75,000) for the charity function which he was attending the night he died.
