The study reveals some instances of racial abuse when dealing with the department.

The report looked at offices in Dublin, Cork and Limerick.

One of the groups involved in the study is Crosscare - a social support agency of the Catholic archdiocese of Dublin.

Their spokesperson Joe O'Brien says immigrants are often in severe financial difficulty when they are dealing with the department.

And he says says although racism was only reported in the case of a few officers, the behaviour is still unacceptable.
