New research shows Ireland's wage gap has narrowed in the years since the financial crisis.

According to a new report from the ESRI, that is partly down to the fact that the welfare system didn't change much, despite the massive increase in the number of people relying on it.

The ESRI is pointing out though that taxes and cuts had to be imposed in other areas so that the government could cover the cost.

Fewer people are also earning higher salaries since the downturn.

However, John Fitzgerald, research professor with the ESRI, told Newstalk's Breakfast it is not as simple as saying that some groups in society were protected from the worst of the crisis::
