A clamp down on slum landlords by Dublin City Council has shown the vast majority of rented homes are not fit to live in.
Close to 6,000 properties were inspected by Environmental Health Officers, with 5,228 of those properties issued with enforcement notices.
The Intensive Inspection Programme was launched in 2012 to bring old accommodation up to standard. The above figures are in relation to inspections carried out between the start of the programme and August of this year.
Orders to carry out works on properties were sent to landlords in over 90 per cent of cases.
Independent councillor for the north inner city, Neil Ring, says the number of enforcement notices is shocking:
“In one way it’s excellent that this programme has taken place, but what it has highlighted is that unfortunately in the city, even in this day and age, what I would describe as ‘slum landlords’, who really don’t care about the quality of the accommodation that they’re providing for people.”
