Chinese telecoms company Huawei will launch the Snappy Awards in Dublin tonight - an independent competition for the Irish Instagram community.

In October a panel of Instagram influencers and a public vote will choose winners across 20 categories including fashion, food, the great outdoors, music and animals.

Filter-happy photographers can enter by tagging their posts with hashtags like #SnapysMusic.

The awards promise winners prizes that "money cannot buy," tailored to the categories that they win in.

Ahead of tonight's launch in the RHA Gallery in Dublin, the organisers have been crunching the numbers, and come up with some interesting facts about Ireland's Instagram habits.

We seem to be a selfie-obsessed nation - the Irish take 40 times more selfies than people in the US, and eight times more than our English neighbours.

Galway is the country's selfie capital, and #CliffsOfMoher is Ireland's most Instagramed landmark with Croke Park following as a close second.

Instagram has enjoyed rapid growth - it currently has more active users than Twitter and is in the middle of a radical redesign to ensure that it isn't left behind as user habits evolve.

There are 70 million photos shared on Instagram every day, and over 30 billion images have been shared since it went live in October of 2010.
