The unusual team sport sees players don a snorkle, grab a specialised small hockey stick, dive underwater and try to get the weighted puck into the opposing goal. Teams usually have 10 players, with six 'active' in the water and four in waiting. The players are rotated regularly. The result is a surprisingly fast and dynamic aquatic sport.
Organised by Underwater Hockey Ireland in conjunction with the Gathering, this weekend sees the inagural Dublin Invitational Tournament. There will be matches taking place between 10.30am and 7pm.
There will be some limited space set aside in one of the pools for observers curious to see the game in action. However, given the nature of the sport and limited availability of equipment, the organisers advise only experienced snorklers with access to their own equipment attempt to spectate.
