Do you ever struggle to feel sexy, desirable and attractive on the dance floor? Instead are you self-conscious, nervous and lacking in confidence? If so maybe we have a solution - it's simple, just switch off the lights.

Ronan Conway from Cork is just back from Melbourne, Australia, where he witnessed 'No Lights No Lycra'. It lets dancers in the dark find freedom from an 'image-based society' which is a little like Dublin's Morning Gloryville - the 6am no alcohol before work disco. I went along last night to Ireland's first ever disco in a pitch black room to find out more called SodaBreadBox.com.

There are no lights, no alcohol and no dress code.

People from all over Ireland and Europe showed up to Film Base in Temple Bar, Dublin, to dance for an hour with no drink or lights just for the hell of it.

Soda Bread Box wants people to dance and express themselves in a way they wouldn't normally. Conway explains the ethos behind the event: "Everyone is a dancer. Everyone should dance whatever way music moves them. We created a dimly-lit space with funky tunes in the hope that it will allow people to express themselves."

What to expect

  • Friendly, non-threatening atmosphere which is free of alcohol
  • Open to all ages, genders, backgrounds and demographics
  • Safe, cosy, dimly lit room where you can move freely in the company of others to great music
  • It’s not about being a “good” dancer, it’s about the feeling of letting loose and dancing to the beat
  • It’s a stress relieving form of workout and it’s fun
  • Water supplied but advisable to bring you own

Have a listen to how I got on...
