SIPTU workers at Irish Rail have confirmed they will strike next month.

The one-day work stoppage will take place on Monday, August 25th.

It will be preceeded by a continuous indefinte work to rule measure from Sunday August 24th. That will include an overtime and rest day working ban.

This strike action comes in response to Irish Rail's decision to implement new cost-saving measures, as recommended by the Labour Court.

SIPTU's Paul Cullen told Newstalk's Breakfast his members cannot be expected to 'subsidise public transport', maintaining they should in fact be awarded a pay increase for their increased productivity:

Irish Rail says it will introduce temporary pay cuts from August 24th - ranging from a cut of 1.7% for staff earning up to €56,000 per year, to over 6% for those earning more than €100,000.

Barry Kenny from Irish Rail is urging workers to avoid taking any action that may disrupt services and put the company's reputation at further risk.

He says the pay-cuts are essential if the company is to survive:

Further work stoppages are not being ruled out by SIPTU.

The National Bus and Rail Union - which also rejected the pay cuts - says it will now ballot its members on industrial action, up to and including strike action. The result of that ballot will be revealed next Friday.
