Irish Water says it has destroyed all paper records of PPS numbers

Irish Water says it has destroyed all paper records of PPS numbers.

The utility was ordered to get rid of them after the government decided people no longer needed to submit them for billing purposes.

It comes as the first bills arrive on doormats around the country today, and hundreds of staff prepare to face customer queries on the Irish Water helpline.

However while hard copies of PPS numbers have been destroyed, company spokesperson Elizabeth Arnett says the work is ongoing

Meanwhile, a Socialist TD has claimed water charges are a step towards privatising Ireland's water infrastructure.

Deputy Paul Murphy says he believes the current government would privatise Irish Water now, if it weren't for the opposition it would face.

He says he's using recent history in Europe as evidence for his claims:

Sinn Fein today published their Water Services Repeal Bill. The Bill has been ruled out of order by the Oireachtas Bills Office.
