An Irish priest has been found guilty of sexually abusing a minor while working in Chile’s capital, Santiago.
The Houston Chronicle reports that Rev. John O’Reilly was working as school chaplain at Cumbres school, in the Las Condes area.
The priest was accused of molesting two pre-teen girls between 2007 and 2012. The court absolved him of one charge.
The court found that O’Reilly committed the abuse during school hours in 2010 and 2012.
O’Reilly continues to deny any wrongdoing.
"The court has established ... beyond all reasonable doubt the following facts: that O'Reilly decided to carry out actions of a sexual nature through body contact with a school student," Judge Maria Teresa Barrientos said.
O’Reilly moved to Chile in the 1985 and became a citizen of the country in 2008.
Prosecutors are asking for a 10 year sentence for O’Reilly.
The Catholic Church has recently lost support in Chile following a major paedophilia scandal in 2010. Four teenage boys alleged one of the country’s most revered priests had abused them. The priest escaped criminal charges as the statute of limitations had expired, although the judge in the case found the allegations were truthful.
