It has been a disastrous night for the Irish clubs involved in European competition.

Derry City and Sligo Rovers were both knocked out of the Europa League, while Dundalk also fell short in their tie.

Sligo started the night with the best chance of reaching the third round of qualifiers after beating Rosenborg 2-1 last week in the first leg of their tie.

But, despite Danny North scoring an early goal for Sligo, Rosenborg ran out 3-1 winners in tonight's second-leg at the Showgrounds, which saw the Norwegian side advance 4-3 on aggregate.

Derry City also took the lead tonight in Belarus when Michael Duffy scored after just 6 minutes, but the Candystripes were beaten 5-1 by their hosts Shacktyor Soligorsk which saw them crash out 6-1 over the two legs.

Dundalk fought back from conceding an early goal to lead their hosts Hajduk Split 2-1 tonight in Croatia.

But the Croatian side held on to win 3-2 on aggregate and knock the Lilywhites out.
