Italian politicians have elected Sergio Mattarella (73) as the country's new president.

The Constitutional Court judge and veteran politician is Italy's 12th president since World War II.

The Sicilian succeeds Giorgio Napolitano (89) who is stepping down because of his advanced age.

The result comes after three inconclusive rounds of voting this week, in which a two-thirds majority was needed.

Mr Mattarella was elected in the fourth round. He is expected to be sworn in next week for a seven-year term.

The role of the Italian president is mostly ceremonial - but the office holds important powers at times of political instability.
