Justice Committee could ask questions separate to garda inquiry - member

A member of the Oireachtas Justice Committee still wants to look into the Garda Tapes controversy - separate to the Fennelly inquiry.

Cabinet Ministers have signed off on the terms of reference for the Commission of Investigation, which will also examine the resignation of Martin Callinan and the Sophie Toscan duPlantier murder inquiry.

Independent Deputy Finian McGrath believes it doesn't stop the Justice committee from looking into the issues as well.

This morning he'll bid to persuade fellow members that the Secretary General at the Department of Justice and the former Garda Commissioner Callinan should face their questions - and he believes two sessions would be enough to get the facts, though the inquiry itself is expected to take about a year.

Deputy McGrath told Newstalk's Breakfast he is pushing very hard this morning for committee appearances:
