The Justice Minister says she didn't ask her Secretary General to resign, but neither did she ask him to stay in his position.

Frances Fitzgerald has been facing further questions about the Toland report, which yesterday criticised the Department of Justice over its 'closed' and 'secretive' culture.

She has also defended the two weeks it took to publish the 22 page document after she received it, saying she consider it and released it as quickly as she could.

Brian Purcell stepped aside from his role at the top of the department in light of the report's findings, and is to be reassigned within the civil service.

Minister Fitzgerald has insisted it was not her idea that he leave the department:

Ms Fitzgerald will be called to appear before the Oireachtas Justice Committee to answer questions in relation to the report.

The Chair of the Oireachtas Justice Committee, Fine Gael's David Stanton, wants to meet before the Dáil reconvenes:

Ms Fitzgerald yesterday called the report's findings 'serious and hard-hitting'.
