A Labour Senator is launching a new Bill to allow same-sex marriage here. Senator Ivana Bacik wants an amendment to the current Civil Partnership legislation.

It is one of the topics up for discussion as part of the Constitutional Convention on whether to allow gay marriage in Ireland.

Since 2011 gay couples could enter into a civil partnership under legislation here but those partnerships are not considered a marriage under law. It is believed a change to our current constitution would be needed to allow for that.

However Senator Bacik is hoping to avoid that with an amendment to the current legislation which will recognise gay marriage.

'This is Labour Party policy'

It comes over a month after the British House of Commons voted in favour of a similar Bill.

Senator David Norris originally introduced this Bill in the Seanad. But Senator Bacik says they withdrew it in protest at the delay by government in providing for legal recognition for same-sex couples.

She explained the amendment to Lunchtime here on Newstalk.
