Brendan Rodgers described Liverpool’s defeat to West Brom as a “setback”. The Baggies smash and grab win could certainly be described in those terms, just as the Reds were beginning to develop fleeting notions about a late Champions League push.

But Rodgers had already suffered a setback prior to kick off when he learnt that Daniel Sturridge would be unavailable as a result of a thigh injury sustained against Manchester City eight days earlier.

It is a testament to Sturridge’s growing importance just a month since his arrival at Anfield. The former Chelsea striker was instrumental in the 2 – 2 draw at City – a game the Merseysiders really should have won.

Apart from his excellent opening goal from long range, his link up play with Luis Suarez has been top drawer.

It has been a feature of Liverpool’s improved form since the turn of the year. And it was conspicuous by its absence at Anfield on Monday night along with an excellent showing from Ben Foster in the West Brom goal.

Suarez, on his own, is a fantastic footballer but he is not really suited to leading the line. The Uruguayan is a bigger danger when he uses his guile, ball control and imagination when running at defenders rather than in behind them.

In contrast Sturridge is much more direct and is excellent when playing off the shoulder of the last defender, utilizing his razor sharp pace which has seen him net four times in six games.

Liverpool were devoid of that partnership and Sturridge’s directness against West Brom and it showed as the Reds were devoid of creativity with Suarez playing further forward.
