A politician in the British Labour Party has hit out after she was asked about her weight in a newspaper interview.

The political editor at The Daily Mail, Simon Walters, asked Liz Kendall about her hopes for leading the party - while also delving into some more personal issues.

The paper wrote: "She looks the same weight as the Duchess (of Cambridge) - about 8st - though when I ask she slaps me down with a raucous 'f*** off!', adding quickly: 'Don't print that.'"

The article also explored her fashion and shopping habits, with one caption under a photo of her reading "With her habit of using the same shops as the Duchess of Cambridge the Liz look isn't cheap."

Ms Kendall told the BBC she "cannot wait for a world when women are judged the same as men".

She questioned whether the paper would ask a male politician the same question.

"I just think it's unbelievable that in the 21st Century women still get asked such very, very different questions from men. Can you imagine the Mail on Sunday asking the weight of the prime minister, George Osborne or any other leading politician?," she told BBC Radio 5.
