So far, they have just under 4% of the vote, or just eight seats. Earlier, Deputy Party leader Joan Burton said the party had suffered a 'shellacking' at the hands of the electorate.

Fine Gael too are suffering, though not to the same extent. Fine Gael Minister Leo Varadkar says the electorate has spoken loud and clear and he'll accept whatever role the Taoiseach gives him in the upcoming reshuffle:

Former Minister Mary Hanafin has been elected for Fianna Fáil to Dun Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council.

Her return to politics was last minute and not without controversy.

Kate Feeney's looks set to take a second seat for Fianna Fail in that ward.

Speaking after she was elected - a very emotional Mary Hanafin said she was thrilled:

Meanwhile, the Green Party secured its first seat in the local election in Dublin.

It’s also the party’s first election win in Dublin City Council in 10 years.

Patrick Costello has been elected in the Rathgar-Rathmines constituency, and he feels it’s a new mandate for the Green Party:

Mayo election

The first councillor in the country to be elected was Independent Michael Kilcoyne, who won a seat on Mayo County Council.

He said it was clear his vote, in the Castlebar electoral area, was an anti-government vote

He received 2,921 first preference votes-reaching over 1,200 more than the quota.

Meanwhile, a Sinn Féin Councillor has made history in Mayo. Therese Ruane is the first representative for the party in the Castlebar electoral area since the 1920s.

Ms. Ruane contested the 2009 local election unsuccessfully.

She won the third seat in the Castlebar electoral area today.

Speaking after her election, Ms. Ruane said she believes the people want change.

Limerick City

Former Fine Gael Mayor of Limerick, Diarmuid Scully, has launched a scathing attack on Fianna Fáil for "ruining" the country's finances.

The outgoing city councillor is fighting for his political life for the final seat in the newly formed Limerick City East six seater.

Despite Cllr Scully achieving only 499 votes and needing over 800 to reach the quota, he is still not conceding defeat.

He described his party's handling of the medical card crisis as "insane", "cruel" and "politically amateurish".

Diarmuid Scully says the water charges have also had an impact at local level:
