Gardai have found two handguns in a suspected getaway car that was burnt out following the shooting of Christy Keane at the University of Limerick this morning.

The 54-year-old remains in stable but critical condition at University Hospital Limerick.

Christy Keane - a brother of murdered Limerick gangster Kieran Keane - was shot outside the UL Sports Arena this morning.

Mr Keane had parked his car on the UL campus and was walking to the sports arena for a gym workout when he was shot a number of times in the chest.

Two armed masked men approached him shortly before 7am and opened fire at close range.

They fled in a car and Mr Keane was rushed by ambulance to University Hospital Limerick, where his condition is said to be critical.

Two cars are believed to have been used - a red Ford Focus and a white Volvo Estate. Both were found burnt out at two separate locations.

Superintendent Derek Smart is leading the investigation, and is appealing for anybody with information about the cars to contact gardaí:

Mr Keane served nine years in prison for possession of cannabis in 2000, and he has survived at least one previous attempt on his life.

His brother, Kieran, was shot dead in 2003 and his nephew Eoin Treacy was stabbed 17 times in the same attack but survived.

Christy's son Liam, who was previously charged with the murder of a teenager, is currently serving 10 years in jail for possession of a loaded handgun.

Reporter in Limerick, David Raleigh, says Mr Keane's family was involved in a long-running feud with the McCarthy Dundon gang:
