Argentina's Mario Kempes is the latest high profile football figure to criticize Lionel Messi's Golden Ball award at the World Cup.
The 1978 winner of the Golden Ball, Golden Boot and World Cup, Kempes said the midfielder's performances were "not up to standard" and that he was given the trophy for the tournament's best player for marketing reasons.
Diego Maradona was also critical of the decision to award Messi with the best player.
The Barcelona star scored four goals during the group stages, including winners against Bosnia and Iran, while he also provided the assist for Angel Di Maria's extra-time winner against Switzerland in the last-16.
