A former education minister says that teachers should not mark their own students' exams for the Junior Certificate.

Mary Hanafin of Fianna Fail says that she agrees with reforming the junior cycle, but thinks that the marking of assessments should be independent.

Yesterday, the current Education Minister Jan O'Sullivan said she plans to go ahead with changes to the Junior Cert - despite teachers unions not reaching an agreement on the proposals.

Ms Hanafin was education minister from 2004 until 2008.

The Dun Laoghaire-Rathdown County Councillor says the Junior Cert needs to remain standardised across all schools.

And while there is still scope for reform, she says the grading process needs to be independent.
