Commemoration ceremonies are taking place across the country to honour those who died at war or on duty with the United Nations.

President Michael D. Higgins and Taoiseach Enda Kenny are attending proceedings in Dublin.

A multi-faith service of prayer is underway at the Royal Hospital at Kilmainham in Dublin this morning in memory of Irish citizens who died at war.

Those killed on duty with the United Nations will also be honoured across the country today.

Events are being held in Cork, Galway, Kilkenny, Limerick, Mayo, Sligo, Waterford.

The fallen servicemen and women will be given full honours as the Taoiseach, President and Council of State will be among those paying tribute.

A total of 86 Irish soldiers have died in the service of the United Nations since 1960.
