Tracing your family history has got a lot easier after parish registers were published online.

More than 370,0000 images of Catholic registers from the 1740s to the 1880s have been digitised by the National Library of Ireland.

The records are considered the single most important source of information on Irish family history before the 1901 census.

They cover almost 1,100 parishes throughout Ireland, and consist mainly of baptismal and marriage records.

95% of parish registers from the 1740s to the 1880s are in existence - and since the 1970s, the microfilm has been available to view at the National Library.

However there was such a high demand for access, that they decided to digitise them.

Ciara Kerrigan was in charge of the project, and says it is a game changer.

The US Ambassador to Ireland says the publication online of parish records will increase the number of Americans visiting Ireland.

It is the biggest ever digitisation project by the National Library of Ireland.

Ambassador Kevin O'Malley says it will provide a huge boost to those looking to trace their heritage.
