The Tánaiste Joan Burton says secondary children's hospitals will be applied for at sites in Dublin as part the new national children's hospital.

It comes as the Department of Health yesterday announced it wanted to relocate the three maternity hospitals following a review of services.

The Coombe will be moving to St James's - to join the new children's hospital - and the National Maternity Hospital had already announced a move to the St Vincent's University Hospital campus in south Dublin.

Meanwhile, the Rotunda is set to move to Connolly Hospital in Blanchardstown.

The new children's hospital facility is to be built on the grounds of St James's.

The project will see Our Lady's Children's Hospital Crumlin, Temple Street Children's University Hospital, and the National Children's Hospital at Tallaght come under one roof.

But speaking to the Pat Kenny Show here on Newstalk, Ms Burton says two other applications will be made for Blanchardstown and Tallaght.
