The Rehab Group has appointment a new board of directors as it tries to overcome its recent financial turbulence.

It announced the change at its annual general meeting - with the appointment of 16 people, 13 of whom are new appointees. The group says all of them will serve in a voluntary and unpaid capacity.

Rehab also announced reforms aimed at enhancing the effectiveness and oversight of the board.

The new appointments follow a robust recruitment process overseen by a transitional board nominations committee. The same committee was responsible for sourcing and nominating the Rehab Group chairman and interim CEO Seán Egan earlier this year.

A comprehensive review was initiated by Rehab last May to address failings in governance that had come to light earlier this year.

One of the aims of this review has been to rejuvenate the group board with individuals of broad-ranging expertise. Rehab also says that many of the new board members "have significant personal experience and knowledge in relation to disability."

Mr Egan said "I am extremely pleased that the process of appointment of a new board has attracted individuals of such high calibre, all of whom are enthusiastically committed to supporting Rehab."

"The new board has the right mix of relevant experience, skills and empathy - and this will benefit the organisation hugely," he added.

Meanwhile Rehab says the process to appoint a new CEO is "well advanced with strong candidates emerging" and they hope to be in a position to make an announcement on this in early October.

The former CEO, Angela Kerins, resigned back in April.
