Independent TD Stephen Donnelly has again called for an independent Banking Inquiry.

Mr Donnelly resigned from the Inquiry last month, after the government's controversial appointment of two Senators - Fine Gael's Michael D'Arcy and Labour's Susan O'Keeffe.

At the time he said he could not sit on an Inquiry he felt the government were trying to control.

The Wicklow/East Carlow representative has this week repeated calls for an independent Banking Inquiry he first made at the time of his withdrawal.

Speaking at the Glenties Summer School in Co Donegal this week, Stephen Donnelly told thejournal.ie, "For me it comes down to this: Nobody takes parliament seriously including parliament itself. So the only way we’re ever going to get parliament to be taken seriously and have a serious role is if it takes itself seriously and that requires standing up to abuses of power."

Recently Deputy Donnelly told Newstalk the events leading up to the setting up of the Banking Inquiry represented politics at its worst.

Mr Donnelly was also criticised by former Minister for Communication Pat Rabbitte, who accused him of resigning from the Banking Inquiry because he became aware of the workload that would be associated with it.

Meanwhile, there was speculation on Newstalk's Breakfast programme this morning that former Rehab Chief Executive Angela Kerins' move to seek a High Court injunction to prevent her from being called before the Oireachtas Public Accounts Committee, after what she called her initial damaging appearance, could limit the Banking Inquiry's work.
