The Tánaiste is insisting the Justice Minister did not mislead the Dáil in relation to the GSOC bugging claims.

The comments from Eamon Gilmore come ahead of an appearance by Alan Shatter before an Oireachtas Committee on Wednesday where he will answer questions.

But the coalition is continuing to reject calls for an Independent inquiry.

Mr. Gilmore says Minister Shatter will clarify any issues and that he did nit mislead the Dáil.

The Irish Council for Civil Liberties has meanwhile called for an independent inquiry into the GSOC bugging revelations.

The Council says the inquiry is needed to "staunch the erosion of public trust" in the independence and effectiveness of Ireland's police accountability systems.

The ICCL says public trust in our national authorities has been badly shaken by a week of claims and counter-claims.

The ICCL says any independent inquiry should examine a number of issues including what prompted the GSOC security sweep, and who deployed technology "only available to Government agencies" in the vicinity of the GSOC offices last year.

But Director of the ICCL Mark Kelly does not think things will be any clearer after the appearance by the Justice Minister.

Committee warned

Meanwhile, the Chair of the Oireachtas Oversight Committee is being warned not to prejudge the outcome of any investigation into allegations of bugging at GSOC.

Padraig MacLochlainn of Sinn Fein is also calling for an independent inquiry into the issue after fresh revelations over the weekend.

The latest reports claim that a security sweep at the office of the Garda Siochána Ombudsman Commission was carried out after it emerged that a senior Garda appeared to have information about a case being investigated by them.

Justice Minister Alan Shatter is due before the Oversight Committee on Wednesday and committee member, Charlie Flanagan, is warning that the Chairman needs to be careful not to pre-judge him.
