Oscar Pistorius could return to competitive sport and compete in the 2016 Paralympic Games in Rio - if he is not sent to jail.

The athlete remains on bail until he's sentenced next month for the 'culpable homicide', which is South Africa's equivalent of Irish manslaughter, of Reeva Steenkamp.

He faces anything from a fine to 15 years in prison.

South African lawyer Martin Hood says his legal team now need to convince the judge not to lock Mr Pistorius up, and that the athlete 'wants to compete again':

Meanwhile, Reeva Steenkamp's parents say they hope to speak to Oscar Pistorius.

June and Barry Steenkamp told NBC news "justice was not served", and went on to say that a chat with him might help their grieving.

Earlier this week, Mr Pistorius was cleared of two murder charges over the shooting.

Judge Thokozile Masipa said Mr Pistorius did not intend to kill anyone and could not have seen that the intruder he thought was hiding in his toilet was actually Ms Steenkamp.

However the judge also said the double amputee had been "negligent" on the night he killed the model at his Pretoria home.

Pistorius showed little emotion as the guilty verdict of culpable homicide was handed down.
