An overturned bin truck has closed one of the country's busiest roads this afternoon.

Motorists travelling eastbound on the M6 have been forced to use local roads around Athlone - after the truck overturned at lunchtime.

The incident occurred between Ballinasloe and Athlone, between junctions 13 and 14.

An emergency plan was put in place to clear fuel from the road.

A crane is currently en route to remove the bin lorry.
