Israeli forces have killed a Palestinian farmer in the northern Gaza Strip - the first such death since the 50-day Gaza conflict ended, officials have said.

Fadel Mohammed Halawa was shot by soldiers as he searched for songbirds, according to relatives.

The 32-year-old's death - east of the Jabalya refugee camp - was confirmed by the Palestinian Health Ministry, who said the Israeli military were to blame.

An emergency services spokesman said the bullet had hit him in the back, and was seemingly fired from an army watchtower close by.

The Israeli military has claimed that Mr Halawa was accompanied by another Palestinian, and that both men had not responded to calls for them to halt - even when troops had fired warning shots into the air.

"Once they didn't comply, they fired towards their lower extremities. One was hit," a spokeswoman added.

Tensions have also flared elsewhere in the West Bank. One Palestinian home has been torched in a village near Ramallah, with "Death to Arabs" scrawled on a wall in Hebrew. The owner has blamed the attack on Jewish settlers.

The latest unrest comes amid a refreshed dispute over Jerusalem's holiest site.
