The distinctive chimneys at the Poolbeg Generating Station could soon be demolished.

The ESB has warned that keeping the structures in place may not be the best use of its resources.

A review of the site is underway and a decision will be made by the end of the year.

The Poolbeg Generating Station was commissioned by the ESB in 1971 on the side of the old Pigeon House Power Station. The distinctive red and white towers quickly became two of Dublin's most recognisable landmarks. They are both over 207 metres tall, with the second chimney a few centimetres taller than the first.

The old power station units were 'retired' in early 2010, although the newer 'combined gas cycle technology unit' remains operational at the site.

A local environment group has slammed the possibility that the famous chimneys could be demolished.

Chairman of the Environment Group of Ringsend, Damien Cassidy, says they are iconic structures and doesn't "buy the argument that they are going to cost a lot of money to keep in repair":
