Turkey's Prime Minister has won his country's first direct presidential election.

Recep Tayyip Erdogan secured over 52% of the vote. The main opposition leader Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu has already conceded defeat.

Reports have suggested turnout for the election was low.

The 60-year-old Mr Erdogan is now expected to go ahead with plans to increase the powers of the presidency, which has been mainly a ceremonial post.

Mr Erdogan is currently serving his third term as prime minister having first taken office in 2003. He would have had to step down from the position at the end of his current term due to a limit set by his own Justice and Development Party.
