The public are being asked to make submissions as to whether or not Ireland should move its clocks forward permanently.

The Oireachtas Committee on Justice, Defence and Equality is asking for written submissions from interested groups or individuals to issues raised by the Brighter Evenings Bill.

The Committee already conducted a discussion on it in November 2011.

The Bill proposes to allow the minister with responsibility for time - the justice minister - to report on the costs and benefits of moving Ireland to the Central European Time (CET) zone.

This would bring us on a par with the rest of the continent.

The Bill also proposes to allow the Minister to move the clocks forward by one hour on a three year trial period - and then to do so permanently if required.

Written submissions should be sent by e-mail to brightereveningsbill@oireachtas.ie

The closing date is 3pm on Friday September 12th.

The Committee will consider any suitable submissions, and may invite a number of contributors to public hearings.
