It is claimed two Dáil by-elections will now go ahead on the same day as the local and European polls next month.

The Irish Independent is quoting 'coalition sources' as having confirmed he decision, with the writ for the by-elections to be moved when the Dáil resumes next week.

Two Dáil seats have been left vacant after the resignation of Independent Deputy Patrick Nulty in Dublin West and the death of Fine Gael's Nicky McFadden in the Longford-Westmeath constituency. Nicky McFadden's sister Gabrielle McFadden announced at the weekend that she is to run for her sister's seat. She is the current Mayor of Athlone.

Ireland's voters go to the polls in the Local and European Elections on May 23rd.

Fiach Kelly from the Irish Times spoke to Newstalk's Breakfast:

Property tax promises

It comes amid reports Fine Gael will pledge to cut property taxes in urban areas as part of its manifesto.

Holding all the votes on the same day sets the stage for a so-called "Super Friday". The government will be hoping the gamble avoids the disastrous fate of a similar decision by the Fianna Fáil/Green coalition five years ago.

Fine Gael believes it has a shot in both polls - and its soon-to-be-released local election manifesto is promising homeowners in urban areas, or better financed areas, they may have their property taxes reduced.

Labour's already promised a 15% property tax cut in urban areas. However, the parties committed to reducing the tax must be in control of the local council, in order to implement changes.

On the trail

With just under a month to go to polling day, Newstalk's reporter Kieran Cuddihy has been accompanying the Fianna Fáil leader as he canvasses in Clare:
