Review finds Galway hospital made significant progress since death of Savita Halappanavar

A report into the workings of Galway University Hospital has found that it has made significant progress in implementing the recommendations of three reports into the death of Savita Halappanavar at the hospital.

A statement issued this evening, by Saolta University Heath Care Group, said: “Saolta University Health Care Group and University Hospital Galway have made significant progress in addressing the areas highlighted in the three reports pertaining to the tragic death in October 2012 of Savita Halappanavar.”

The 31 year old was 17 weeks pregnant and miscarrying when she was admitted to the hospital, in October 2012, she died a week later.

Following the death of Ms Halappanavar three investigations were held: a HSE patient safety review; the Coroner’s Inquest; and a HIQA inquiry.

These reports which were critical of the management of her care and laid out 33 recommendations.

An independent review by Ernst & Young found that all of the recommendations have been implemented either fully or on an ongoing basis.

It also found there are no outstanding disciplinary measures required.
