A review is on-going by the Attorney-General in the North over the Public Prosecutors decision not to prosecute Gerry Adams over withholding information from the police about his brother.

Liam Adams was yesterday sentenced to 16 years in prison for the abuse of his niece Aine carried out over 30 years ago. He was convicted of ten charges last month.

The abuse was committed over a five-year period between 1977 and 1981, when she was aged between four and nine. He was also convicted on three charges of gross indecency and four of indecent assault.

Áine Adams (40) has waived her right to anonymity. She had told police her mother and uncle Gerry had confronted her father but he denied any wrong-doing.

She and her mother reported the abuse but later retracted because they felt police were more interested in the politics of her father and uncle.

Gerry Adams has admitted that Liam told him of the abuse in 2000. Back in October, Gerry Adams said he had answered all questions in relation to the case.

Belfast-based reporter Alan Murray told Breakfast here on Newstalk that the withholding of the information is serious.
