Wayne Rooney has publicly apologised to England supporters for the team’s poor performance and early exit at the World Cup.

The Manchester United striker said he is “absolutely devastated to be out of the World Cup” in a post on his official Facebook page.

Rooney was singled out for criticism following England’s opening game defeat to Italy, however the 28 year old was involved in both goals scored by Roy Hodgson’s side in the two games played so far. Rooney set up Daniel Sturridge for the equaliser against Italy in Manaus a week ago and scored England’s only goal of the game in Thursday night’s 2-1 defeat to Uruguay.

Rooney said, “Absolutely devastated to be out of the World Cup. Going into each game we had great belief in ourselves but unfortunately it hasn't worked out. Sorry to all the fans that travelled and at home that we haven't done better...gutted!”

England lost their opening two games, both by a scoreline of two goals to one. However, there was a chance Roy Hodgson’s side could advance to the last 16 if results had gone their way and they had won their final game against Costa Rica. Costa Rica’s shock 1-0 win over Italy in yesterday’s early game condemned England to an early trip home.
