Sinn Féin is seeking to change the law so that victims of domestic violence can be considered for social housing.

Currently, a victim who is a joint owner of a house may not be considered in need of housing if they flee because of domestic violence.

Dublin TD Dessie Ellis put forward a change to the domestic violence legislation in the Dáil this morning.

He says the government still needs to do more.

But the coalition is opposing the proposal.

Junior Housing Minister Paudie Coffey says new legislation addressing this was passed by the Dáil and Seanad just a few months ago.

Mr Coffey says he will make sure local authorities know this.

Yesterday, a moment silence was held for each of the 78 victims of domestic violence since 1996.

More than half of all women murdered since then were killed by a current or former partner.

That represents 52% of resolved murder cases where the victim was a woman.
