SIPTU members in Irish Rail have voted to reject an amended Labour Court recommendation on a cost-cutting plan for the company. The vote was rejected by 53% to 47%.

Workers were voting whether or not to accept new terms relating to proposed pay cuts and cost saving measures.

SIPTU organiser, Paul Cullen, said "Our members have been given the opportunity to democratically express their view on these proposals. It is clear from this ballot result that our members have categorically rejected the acceptance of any further pay reductions".

"It is clear from this vote that SIPTU does not have a mandate from its members to engage in any further negotiations with the management of Irish Rail which include any pay reductions" he added.

The ballot was conducted from the June 19th to July 10th.

The amended proposals came from discussions between union representatives and management on an earlier Labour Court recommendation, which had been previously rejected by SIPTU members.

Industrial action looks likely to proceed as it has already been approved by a 2-to-1 majority.
