Scotland Yard says it's received 27 allegations of child abuse linked to witchcraft and spirit possession in the past year.

Cases include a reported rape, a child forced to drink an unknown substance, and others dunked in a bath  to rid them of evil spirits.

The figure is up from 24 in 2013 and according to the BBC, Scotland Yard is concerned that more cases may be covered by families or communities. The figures of cases reported have risen year-on-year.

Police officers will meet with a group including teachers, childcare and health workers today in London to discuss how to tackle the problem.

Det Supt Terry Sharpe said: "Abuse linked to belief is a horrific crime which is condemned by people of all cultures, communities and faiths.

"A number of high-profile investigations brought the issue of ritual abuse and witchcraft into the headlines but it is important that professionals are clear about the signs to look for."
